Tips for Keeping Your Indoor Plants Thriving in Las Vegas
Indoor plants bring life, beauty, and fresh air into your home, but keeping them healthy—especially in the dry Las Vegas climate—can be tricky. At Rooting For You, we want to set you up for success with simple, effective tips to help your houseplants thrive.
1. Choose the Right Plants for Your Space
Not all plants thrive indoors, especially in desert climates. Opt for hardy, low-maintenance varieties like pothos, snake plants, ZZ plants, and peace lilies. These plants adapt well to indoor conditions and are more forgiving if you miss a watering.
2. Water Wisely
Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes plant owners make. In Las Vegas, our dry air can dry out soil quickly, but that doesn’t mean plants need constant watering. Use the finger test—stick your finger about an inch into the soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water. If it’s still damp, wait a few more days. Always use pots with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
3. Mind the Humidity
Las Vegas has low humidity, which can stress tropical plants that thrive in moisture. Boost humidity by placing a small dish of water near plants, misting them occasionally, or using a pebble tray. Grouping plants together also creates a microclimate with higher humidity.
4. Give Them the Right Light
Different plants have different light needs. South- and west-facing windows get the strongest light, perfect for succulents and cacti. Low-light plants like pothos and snake plants do well in rooms with indirect light. If your home lacks natural sunlight, consider a grow light to supplement.
5. Feed Them Properly
Just like us, plants need nutrients! Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) to keep your plants healthy. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as too many nutrients can cause leaf burn.
6. Keep Pests in Check
Indoor plants can attract pests like spider mites, gnats, and mealybugs. Check leaves regularly for signs of trouble. If you spot pests, wipe leaves with a damp cloth and use a gentle insecticidal soap or neem oil to keep infestations under control.
7. Repot When Needed
If you notice roots growing out of the drainage holes or your plant’s growth has slowed down, it may be time for a bigger home! Choose a pot 1–2 inches larger in diameter and use fresh potting mix to give your plant the nutrients it needs.
8. Show Some Love
Plants respond well to attention! Wipe down dusty leaves, rotate them so they grow evenly, and prune any yellowing or dead leaves. The more you observe your plants, the better you’ll understand their needs.
